Our vicar is always raising money for one cause or another, but he has never managed to get enough money to have the church clock repaired.

have sth. done ^{请某人做某事(使役动词)}

The big clock which used to strike the hours day and night was damaged many years ago and has been silent ever since.

with + 名词 ^{作状语修饰谓语动词（一般为方式状语）}

首先我们要知道在所有的词性之中，名词往往是最正式的、最庄严^{(副词是无法与之相比的)}，更合适于在写作中书面语中的使用^{（类似的用法在新概念中会大量出现）}。

• She faced the difficulty calmly. → She faced the difficulty with calmness.
• I looked at her curiously. → I looked at her with curiosity.
• She spoke to me tenderly. → She spoke to me with tenderness.
• I greeted Philip enthusiastically. → I greeted Philip with enthusiasm.

Looking at his watch, he saw that it was one o'clock, but the bell struck thirteen times before it stopped.

非谓语动词的逻辑主语 ^{非谓语（doing;done;to do）作状语时，一般情况下其隐含的主语应该与主句主语保持一致。}

• Looking at his watch... = When he looked at his watch... ^{非谓语做状语}
• the descriptions given by people...
• Looking at his watch, it was one o'clock. × ^{主语不一致}

before^{的特殊译法}

强调主句的时间比预期的长时，译为"才" It will be a long time before we meet again. ^{要过很长时间我们才能再见面。}
强调主句的时间比预期的短时，译为"就" I hadn't waited long before he came. ^{我没等多久他就来了。}

Armed with a torch, the vicar went up into the clock tower to see what was going on.

• happen 、come up 、 occur 、come about 、take place 、strike 、coincide (with ...) ^{发生（常用于写作替换）}

主动还是被动 ^{（由动词本身搭配所决定的）}

In the torchlight, he caught sight of a figure whom he immediately recognized as Bill Wilkins, our local grocer.

catch sight of ... / catch a glimpse of ... / glimpse ^{一眼看见、瞥见}

• When he began to play a tune, we had our first glimpse of the snake.

a figure ^{人影、轮廓、数字(1~9...)、重要人物}

• A farm worker, who stayed up all night, claimed to have seen a figure cutting corn in the moonlight. ^{NCE3-30 人影}

recognize ... as ... ^认出

• I recognized her as one of my classmates.

'Whatever are you doing up here Bill?' asked the vicar in surprise.

加强疑问语气 ^{(除了特殊疑问词 + ever以外)}

'I'm trying to repair the bell,' answered Bill. 'I've been coming up here night after night for weeks now. You see, I was hoping to give you a surprise.'

现在完成进行时 ^{(have been doing)表示持续性的动作一直到现在，而且还有可能继续下去。}

• They have been trying to find out how the fire began.
• They have been expecting a splendid crop this year.
• Doctors have been trying to find out whether the woman died of a rare disease.

was / were hoping ^{试探性语气}

• I was hoping you could marry me.
• I was hoping you would give me a job. ^{我还盼望着你能给我份工作呢。}
• I was hoping for yogurt. ^{我还期望是酸奶呢。}

'You certainly did give me a surprise!' said the vicar.

强调肯定式^{（emphatic positive）}

在肯定句和祈使句中，在谓语动词前加上助动词do以加强语气。只用于一般现在时（do, does）和一般过去时（did）中。

'You've probably woken up everyone in the village as well.

Still, I'm glad the bell is working again.'

Still ^{尽管如此，还是...（放句首要加一个逗号）}

• nevertheless 、nonetheless 、all the same 、 just the same ^{写作中的替换}
• The girl is not beautiful.Still, I like her very much.
• Nevertheless / Nonetheless / All the same / Just the same, I like her very much.

形容词补足语

• I'm glad the bell is working again.
• I'm afraid that at one o'clock it will strike thirteen times.

there's nothing I can do about it. ^{对此我无能为力}

• The telephone is out of order, and there is nothing I can do about it.
• I know you are not satisfied, but there is nothing I can do about it.
• We apologize for this, but there is nothing we can do about it.
• I guess there's nothing I can do about it. ^{我想我对这件事真是无能为力。}
• Unfortunately, there's nothing I can do about it. ^{很不幸，对此我无能为力。}
• There's nothing I can do about it, unfortunately.^{遗憾的是，我对此无能为力。}

'We'll get used to that, Bill,' said the vicar. ' Thirteen is not as good as one, but it's better than nothing. Now let's go downstairs and have a cup of tea.

as good as = almost ^{几乎...；和...差不多}
