Last Christmas, the circus owner, Jimmy Gates, decided to take some presents to a children's hospital.

take…to ^把…送到

should have done 虚拟表达 ^{原本应该发生而没发生;过去本来应该做，但实际上没做}	should have done = ought to have done You should have come earlier.
needn't have done ^{过去不必做但是做了 §}	He needn't have gone to hospital, but he went just to reassure himself. ^{他本不必去医院的，去了只是想让自己放心点。（英国英语意为“他做了不需要做的事”）}
ought to have done ^{也表示原本应该做而没做所有的情态动词 + have done 都跟过去有关}	You ought to have done your homework.^{你本应该做作业的。} You ought to have been more careful.^{你本应该更小心一点的。}

A policeman approached Jimmy and told him (that) he ought to have gone along a side street as Jumbo was holding up the traffic.

hold up the traffic ^阻碍交通

If you park the car in the street, it’ll hold up the traffic.

Though Jimmy agreed to go at once, Jumbo refused to move.

agree to do sth. ^{同意做某事(to do为不定式 )}	You must not agree to do it. Don't weaken.^{你们一定不能同意做这件事。别心软。}

Fifteen policemen had to push very hard to get him off the main street.

get off ^{从…移去/除去（off＝away from 离开什么地方）}

Please get the box off the boat. ^{请把箱子从船上拿下来。}

The police had a difficult time, but they were most amused.

most amused = very amused^{很有趣(好笑)}

'Jumbo must weigh a few tons,' said a policeman afterwards, 'so it was fortunate that we didn't have to carry him.

afterwards ＝later ^后来

She finished her work, and afterwards/later she went for a walk in the park.^{(她完成了工作，之后/后来她去了公园散步。)}

形式主语	谓+表	主语从句
it ... that = We didn't have to carry him was fortunate.

Of course, we should arrest him, but as he has a good record, we shall let him off this time.'

should arrest ^{真实表达(现在应该做，可以真的去做)}	let sb. off ^{饶恕某人，放过…，对…从轻处理}
The police should arrest any repeat offenders, but sometimes the judge decides to let them off with a warning instead of a harsh punishment.

resume ^{n. 摘要, 概略, <美> 履历}	resume ^{vt. 再继续, 重新开始, 重新占用, 再用, 恢复}

Must ^{通常只用于现在时和将来时，其他时态则用 have to 代替。}	You must stay in bed for another two days.
Have to ^{比 must 往往更强调客观的要求或外在的原因}	He had to change his plans, but he should be returning soon.
Should ^{“应该”，表示义务、责任或某个正确的行为}	疑问句与否定结构则多用 should。should/ought to +have +过去分词表示过去应该做（或完成）而没有做的事。
Ought to ^{比 should 语气略强些，多用于肯定句}	He ought to have returned by now.
