After reading an article entitled 'Cigarette Smoking and Your Health' I lit a cigarette to calm my nerves.

lit (light,lit或lighted) v. 点燃 lighted adj. 被点燃的
I lit a cigarette. This is a lighted cigarette.

I smoked with concentration and pleasure as I was sure that this would be my last cigarette.

I smoked with concentration and pleasure 一般过去 as I was sure that this would be my last cigarette. 过去将来
I smoke with concentration and pleasure as I am sure that this will be my last cigarette.

I had all the usual symptoms of someone giving up smoking: a bad temper and an enormous appetite.

give up 放弃,放手,停止尝试;认输

someone giving up doing 独立主格(有人放弃做某事)

没有谓语动词也能说清楚一件事。不属于基础语法。通常用于句子中表达两个动作同时发生,其中一个动作由名词短语或代词构成的独立主格表达。这个结构经常用来表达因果关系或者伴随关系。
  1. he rushed out of the house, her heart pounding with fear. (她匆忙离开了房子,心中充满了恐惧。)
  2. I opened the window, the cold wind biting at my face.(我打开了窗户,冷风刺骨般地吹在我的脸上。)
  3. She entered the room, her eyes scanning the surroundings. (她走进了房间,眼睛扫视着四周。)

My friends kept on offering cigarettes and cigars.

cigar n. 雪茄

offer sb. sth. 给某人某物

made no effort 不作努力
  • Success never comes to those who make no effort. 不付出努力,就决不会成功。
  • make no effort to persuade him. 不要试图说服他
  • She wrote the letter with/without effort. 她费力/毫不费力地写了那封信。
make every effort 尽全力,尽一切努力 He made every effort to get / at getting the job.

When my old friend Brian urged me to accept a cigarette, it was more than I could bear.

urged me to accept 怂恿、力劝去接受

  • She urged me to accept the new post, although the job is not very well paid. 她努力劝我接受那个新职位,虽然那职位报酬并不优厚。

was more than I could bear = I couldn't bear more than 后面跟一个从句或一个形容词时可以表示“超出”(多用于口语)

  • He was more than pleased with his new room.
  • This was more than I had expectd.

多个句子连接时,有相同主语省略,中间使用“,”隔开,最后一个连接才加上"and"。

Anyway, as Brian pointed out, it is the easiest thing in the world to give up smoking.

point out = explain 指出,指明
