Asking for trouble

ask for trouble 自找麻烦,自计苦吃(多用于口语)

  • The boss seems to be annoyed.To talk to him now is to ask for trouble.
  • ask for leave 请假
  • ask for help 请求帮助
  • ask for advice 征求建议

I tried to wake up my wife by ringing the doorbell, but she was fast asleep, so I got a ladder from the shed in the garden, put it against the wall, and began climbing towards the bedroom window.

be fast asleep 熟睡:指人在睡眠中非常深沉,完全没有意识到周围的事物。

  • You'll be fast asleep by the time we get home. 等我们到家时你会熟睡了。

begin doing = begin to do 开始做某事:开始进行某项活动或任务。

  • I will begin doing my homework after dinner.晚饭后我会开始做作业。

against the wall 靠墙

  • Can I lean my bike against the wall? 我能把自行车靠在这墙上吗?

介词后面100%要使用doing,不能使用do、to do代替 动词后可以接:doing、to do、do等(根据具体的动词决定)

时间状语主句 时间状语从句 否定前移 宾语从句(I think the windows don' t need cleaning at this time of the night.)
否定前移:否定词 "don't"(不)被移到主语 "the windows"(窗户)之前,从而颠倒了句子的词序。这种结构强调了说话者的否定观点,即他们认为这个时间不需要清洁窗户。这是一个常见的应用,以强调说话者的态度或观点。

否定前移 在英文中通常会将从句里的否定前移到主句中,以达到“开门见山”的目的

  • I think you're not wrong. → I don't think you're wrong. 我认为你不是错的。
  • Last year he believed that the plan would not fail. → Last year he didn' t believe that the plan would fail. 去年他相信这个计划将不会失败。

I immediately regretted answering in the way I did, but I said, 'I enjoy cleaning windows at night.'

regret 常见搭配

regret doing sth. 后悔做了…(对已发生的事情表示后悔) regret to do sth. 遗憾…(对现在要发生的事表示抱歉)
I regretted saying it almost at once. We regret to inform you that you needn’t come here next week.
remember/forget + to do sth. 指末来的动作 remember/forget doing sth. 指过去的动作(已发生过)
  • I remembered to post the letters. 我记着去邮信了。(没有忘记)
  • I forgot to ask Tom. 我忘了去问汤姆。
  • I remember posting/having posted the letters.
  • Have you forgotten meeting/having met her at a party?你忘记了曾在一次聚会上见过她吗?
stop to do sth. 指目的 stop doing sth. 停下正在做的动作
On the way to the station I stopped to buy a paper. When he told us the story, we just couldn’t stop laughing.

'Excuse my interrupting you. 祈使句(面对面默认主语为“你”)

Excuse + doing 动词excuse后面只能接doing

  • 'Would you mind my coming with you?' he asked, before I had finished speaking.

verbal irony 言语反语 / 字面反讽

  • I love banning the spammers. 字面:我可太喜欢封禁垃圾广告发送者了 真实含义:垃圾广告号真烦人,真希望把他们封掉(表达厌烦)
  • I don't think the windows need cleaning at this time of the night. 字面:我觉得夜里这个点,窗户应该不需要擦。 👉 真实意思:半夜爬墙,你这行为很可疑,我盯上你了。不是真的在讨论擦窗户。
  • "So do I," answered the policeman in the same tone. 字面:我也是(我也喜欢半夜擦窗户)。 👉 反讽:顺着男主的借口继续挖苦,故意假装相信他 “半夜擦窗” 的说辞。
  • It starts to rain. "Oh wonderful!" 字面:太棒啦! 真实:糟了 / 真倒霉(出事的时候说)
  • That’s just great. 字面:太好了。 真实:这下完蛋了,真烦人。
  • Nice job! 字面:干得漂亮! 真实:搞砸了!(对方做错事,挖苦)
  • You’re so helpful. 字面:你真乐于助人。 真实:你一点忙都没帮上,净添乱。
  • What a genius! 字面:真是个天才! 真实:这做法太蠢了。
  • Sure, why not. 字面:当然,为什么不呢。 真实:行吧,随便你(内心不情愿,无奈吐槽)
  • I love waiting. 在楼下等了 2 小时的女朋友说马上下来。字面:我超喜欢等待。 真实:等太久,烦死了。

I hate to interrupt a man when he's busy working, but would you mind coming with me to the station?'

be busy doing sth. 忙于做某事:指某人正在进行一项活动或任务,没有空闲时间。

  • My mum is busy cooking dinner. 妈妈正忙着做晚饭。
  • The policeman is busy checking the car. 警察正忙着检查车辆。
  • I was busy climbing the ladder. 我当时忙着爬梯子。

you mind coming = you mind you coming 主语一致(无需要逻辑主语)

  • Would you mind opening the window? 你介意打开窗户吗?(opening 是 you 做的,主语一致)
  • Would you mind waiting for me? 你介意等我一下吗?(waiting 由 you 发出)
  • Would you mind moving your bike? 你介意挪一下你的自行车吗?(moving 由 you 发出)

Fortunately, the shouting woke up my wife who opened the window just as the policeman had started to climb towards me.

my wife who opened the window 我那个打开了窗户的妻子(妻子的范围比较明确,这里应该使用非限制的定语从句?)

注:非限定性定语从句通常使用逗号与主句隔开,但并非必须。逗号的使用与语境和句子结构有关。在正式写作中,为了提高句子的清晰度和读者理解,通常建议在非限定性定语从句之前加上逗号。
注2:在《三册》第7课会学到接续性分句 (continuative clause)大概可以解释这是限定性、非限定性的问题(这里根本就不是正常的定语从句)。
  • I called the manager and he solved the problem in minutes. ⇒ I called the manager who solved the problem in minutes.
  • He threw a stone and it broke the window. ⇒ He threw a stone which broke the window.
  • I ran into an old friend and she told me the secret. ⇒ I ran into an old friend who told me the secret.
  • They reached the top of the mountain and there they saw the sunrise. ⇒ They reached the top of the mountain where they saw the sunrise.
