Last spring my wife suggested that I call in a man to look at our lawn mower.

call sb. ⇔ in to ask sb. to come and help you with a difficult situation 叫某人来帮忙

  • Your father is very sick. You’d better call in a doctor at once. 

look at … = examine … 检查(看看怎么回事)

  • have a look at(看一下怎么回事)
  • have a close look at (仔细的看一下)

It had broken down the previous summer, and though I promised to repair it, I had never got round to it.

get round / around to sth. / doing 有时间(找到时间)做某事

  • I finally got around to cleaning the garage this weekend.我终于在这个周末抽出时间打扫了车库。

I would not hear of the suggestion and said that I would fix it myself.

One Saturday afternoon, I hauled the machine into the garden and had a close look at it.

Inevitably the repair job was not quite so simple.

After buying a new chain I was faced with the insurmountable task of putting the confusing jigsaw puzzle together again.

be faced with ... 面临着

  • He was faced with a barrage of angry questions from the floor.他面临着听众一连串的愤怒质问。
be confronted with ... 面临,遭遇 China is faced / confronted with the problem of overpopulation.

I was not surprised to find that the machine still refused to work after I had reassembled it, for the simple reason that I was left with several curiously shaped bits of metal which did not seem to fit anywhere.

for the simple reason that … = simply because ... 只不过是因为

leave sb. with sth. 把某事留给某人

  • The movie left me with a sense of hope and inspiration.这部电影给我留下了一种希望和启发的感觉。

  • He couldn't imagine why he had let so much time pass without contacting her. 他想像不出为什么他这么长时间没跟她联系。
  • As the years passed he felt trapped by certain realities of marriage. 随着岁月的流逝,他感到受困于某些婚姻的现实情况。
  • The children passed the time playing in the streets. 孩子们在街上玩耍消磨时间。

When my wife nagged me to do something about it, I told her that either I would have to buy a new mower or let the grass grow.

nagged (at) sb. to do sth. 唠叨着某人去做某事

  • My girlfriend nagged me to cut my hair.我女朋友唠叨着催我去理发。
  • The children have nagged me into taking them to the cinema.孩子们对我纠缠不休,使我终于带他们去看了电影。

Buried somewhere in deep grass there is a rusting lawn mower which I have promised to repair one day.

promise to do 承诺做某事

  •  He reneged on a promise to leave his wife. 他背弃了诺言,离开了他的妻子。
  • Claire had made me promise to tell her the truth. 克莱尔已经逼我答应了告诉她真相。
  • We promise to deliver to your door within 48 hours of you ordering. 我们承诺在接到订单后48小时内送货上门。
