Dentists always ask questions when it is impossible for you to answer.

sth. be impossible for sb. sb.不可能(办到某事)

  • It's impossible for me to be there before eight. 我在八点之前不可能赶到那里。
  • It's impossible for him to catch the bird. 他要抓住这只鸟是不可能的。
  • It's physically impossible for her to lick your elbow. 她不可能舔到你自己的肘子。
  • However, this is impossible for farmers. 然而，这对农民来说是不可能的。
  • It is impossible for you to get there in such a short time. 你在那么短的时间内到达那是不可能的。
形式主语 主语从句
It is impossible for him to help you. It is impossible that he will help you.
To help you is impossible for him. 还原主语 He will help you is impossible. ×

for a while 一段时间

  • The music soothed her for a while. 音乐让她稍微安静了一会儿。
  • Let's talk for a while. 咱们聊一会儿吧。
  • They chatted for a while.他们聊了一会儿。

to rest = to have a rest 休息一下

  • I asked you to have a rest.我让你休息一下。
  • Stop to have a rest now and then.时不时停下来休息一下。
  • The doctor told me to rest.医生叫我休息。
pulling teeth 费力不讨好的事 Asking one day off from my boss is like pulling teeth. 要求老板给一天假，活像要他的命似的。

He knew (that) I collected match boxes and asked me whether my collection was growing.

be growing （在）增加

  • Naomi idolized her father as she was growing up.在成长过程中，娜奥米很崇拜她父亲。
  • It is growing all life long. 它一生都在成长。
  • Exports of Australian wine are growing at a phenomenal rate.澳大利亚葡萄酒的出口正以惊人的速度增长。
collect v.聚集，聚积；收集，采集 collection n.收藏品，收集物
Every weekend, she likes to collect seashells on the beach, adding them to her growing collection at home.每个周末，她喜欢在海滩上收集贝壳，把它们添加到家里不断增加的收藏中。

He then asked me how my brother was and whether I liked my new job in London.

how my brother was (宾语从句)陈述句顺序 How was my brother? 特殊疑问句
并列句 主语相同可以省主语、主谓相同可以省主谓、甚至主谓宾相同也可以省掉。 He then asked me how my brother was and （He asked me）whether I liked my new job in London.
复合句
  • He then asked me how my brother was. 然后他问我兄弟怎么样。
  • He then asked me whether/if I liked my new job in London.然后他问我是否喜欢在伦敦的新工作。

In answer to these questions I either nodded or made strange noises.

in answer to… 作为对…的回答；响应…的请求 in return for 作为对…的报答
In answer to my request, he wrote a letter to George. 应我的请求，他给乔治写了封信。 Can I buy you lunch in return for your help?感谢你帮忙，我请你吃午饭好吗？

search out 找出，搜寻

  • Have you searched out the books I needed?
  • Survivors of it feel compelled to search out a savior. 幸存者们感到有必要把他们的救世主找出来。
  • The police were trying to search out the real murderer. 警察正尽力找出真正的凶手。

where = 介词 + which

That is the house which I lived in
where 关系副词 I lived.
This is the river I swim.
which I swim in.

When the dentist at last removed the cotton wool from my mouth, I was able to tell him that he had pulled out the wrong tooth.

remove 可以表示“拿去，除去，去掉” 通常结构为“remove +名词 +from”，也可以单独使用
