When I was a teenager, I felt that I was just young and uncertain -- that I was a new boy in a huge school, and I would have been very pleased to be regarded as something so interesting as a problem.

teenager / teen 青少年(13~19)

in one’s teens 青少年时期 When I was in my teens, I was full of energy. 当我处于青少年时期时,我充满了活力。
adolescent 青少年 / 青春期的(叛逆的) My adolescent daughter is starting to explore her interests. 我青春期的女儿开始探索她的兴趣。
adolescence 青春期(不可数) Many changes occur during adolescence. 青春期会发生许多变化。
juvenile 少年的(法律,可数) Juvenile delinquency / delinquent is a growing concern in some areas. 青少年犯罪在一些地区是个日益严重的问题。

huge school 比喻社会(暗喻)

  • Society is like a huge school where everyone learns from each other. 社会就像一个巨大的学校,每个人都在其中相互学习。
  • As a newcomer, I felt lost in the huge school of life. 作为一个新人,我在生活的巨大学校中感到迷失。
  • Navigating the huge school of society can be daunting for young people. 对年轻人来说,探索社会的巨大学校可能令人畏惧。

regard / see / count A as B 把A看作B

  • I would have been pleased if I had been regarded as something so interesting as a problem. 我很高兴被看作是一个如此有趣的问题。
  • That, believe it or not, was one of the findings parents might regard as good news. 信不信由你,家长们认为的好消息可能就是这其中一项发现。
  • They don't value what they regard as inane and pointless. 他们不屑于他们视为空无意义的东西。
think of / look on / conceive of A as B 把A看作B They think of him as a reliable leader. 他们认为他是一个可靠的领导者。
consider A (to be) B 认为A是B You would consider octopus a great delicacy in the Mediterranean. 在地中海,你会认为章鱼是一道美味佳肴。

as something so interesting as a problem = Being a problem is better than being a nobody 成为一个问题总比默默无闻好

  • Being a problem gives you attention, unlike being ignored. 做问题会让你受到关注,而不是被忽视。
  • She believed being a problem was better than fading into the background. 她认为做问题总比默默无闻好。
  • Being a problem means you’re noticed, not overlooked. 做问题意味着你会被注意到,而不是被忽略。

For one thing, being a problem gives you a certain identity, and that is one of the things the young are busily engaged in seeking.

for one thing … for another … 原因之一是… 另一个原因是…

  • For one thing, I don’t like flying, and for another, I can’t afford it. 原因之一是我不喜欢坐飞机,另一个原因是我负担不起。
  • For one thing, stereotypes are often accurate. 首先,刻板印象通常很准确。
  • Don't set him the task. For one thing he's old; for another he's in poor health. 不能让他去干,一则年纪大,二则身体弱。
on the one hand … on the other (hand) … 一方面是… 另一方面是…(矛盾及转折) On the one hand, I’d like a job that pays more, but on the other(hand), I enjoy my current work. 一方面我想找份薪水更高的工作,另一方面我喜欢现在的工作。
not that … but that … 不是因为… 而是因为…(要求上下文对账)
  • Not that I love Caesar less, but that I love Rome more. 不是因为我爱凯撒少,而是因为我更爱罗马。Shakespeare 'Julius Caesar'.
  • Not that I love you less, but that I love liberty more.
  • Not that I love my teacher less, but that I love truth more.
It is not that … but (that) … 不是因为… 而是因为…

be engaged in sth. / doing 忙于某事

  • How many spiders are engaged in this work on our behalf?
  • The young are engaged in seeking their identity. 年轻人忙于寻找自己的身份。
  • She is engaged in writing a novel. 她忙于写一部小说。
  • They are engaged in developing new technology. 他们忙于开发新技术。
