be known to do sth. 众所周知会做某事;据知会做某事
  • Two women are known to have died.
  • Smoking is known to increase a person's risk of developing lung cancer. 
  • Some species of birds are known to migrate thousands of miles each year. 众所周知,某些种类的鸟类每年会迁徙数千英里。

be made from/of 由…制成(看不出来)/构成(根据语境选择 from 或 of)

  • Wine is made from grapes. 葡萄酒是用葡萄做的。
  • Steel is made from iron. 钢是由铁炼成的。
  • There's money to be made from tourism. 旅游业非常有利可图。
be made of 由(构成成分)构成(能看出来) The table is made of solid wood.这张桌子是由实木制成的。

Drinks can be cooled by placing them on ice rather than adding ice to them.

rather than 常译为“而不是”,其词性比较灵活,在后面跟动名词短语时,一般视为介词。

  • She was angry rather than being pleased.
  • We ought to check up, rather than just accepting what he says.

rather than 后不加动名词时一般将其视为“准并列连词”,用于连接词性相同的词项。

  • She telephoned rather than wrote.
  • John ought to go rather than Jean.
  • He is to be pitied rather than to be disliked.
  • I’m going to forget the whole affair, rather than cause trouble.
rather than 而不是/并非
  • We decided to walk rather than take a taxi to the museum.我们决定步行而不是乘出租车去博物馆。
  • The report focused on solutions rather than dwelling on the problems.这份报告专注于解决方案,而不是过多纠缠于问题。
