加里去年有过一次有趣的经历。在离开法国南部的一个小村庄后，他前往了下一个城镇。途中，一个年轻人想搭便车，于是他停下来把他接上了车。年轻人一上车，加里就用法语跟他打招呼，而他也用同样的语言回应了他。除了几个单词外，加里根本不懂法语，所以一路上他们都没有交谈。当车快要到达那个城镇时，那个年轻人突然非常清晰地问道：“你会说英语吗？”很快加里就得知，他是个地道的英国人！
Gary had an interesting experience last year. After he had left a small hamlet in the south of France, he went on to the next town. On the way, a young man tried to hitch a ride, so he stopped and picked him up. As soon as the young man had got into the car, Gary said hello to him in French, and he responded in the same language. Except for a few words, Gary did not know any French at all, so the two did not talk the entire way. The car had nearly reached the town when the young man suddenly said very clearly, "Can you speak English?" As Gary soon learned, he was a real Englishman!
