The assistant told Pamela that Mr. Harmsworth would see her. She felt very nervous when she went into the office. The boss did not look up from his desk when she came in. After Pamela had sat down, Mr. Harmsworth said that business was not doing well and that the company could not afford such large expenditure on payroll. Twenty employees had already been laid off. Pamela thought that her turn had come. She said "Mr. Harmsworth" in a timid voice, but the boss asked her not to interrupt.
