Graham Turner called John Smith and assumed that he was talking to his friend who had been invited to dinner by Mary. Graham told John that he and his wife would be late for dinner because he had to work late at the office. He also asked whether Mary needed any help with the preparations. John was very confused by these remarks because he had no idea what Graham was talking about. After Graham insisted that he was speaking to John Smith the engineer at the Overseas Engineering Company, John clarified that he was just a telephone engineer who was currently repairing Graham's telephone line.
